What is the difference between CraftBukkit and Bukkit

Craftbukkit is a mod for the official Minecraft server that uses the Bukkit API. CraftBukkit is  the server component you download that lets plugins (In computing, a plug-in (or plugin) is a set of software components that adds specific abilities to a larger software application. If supported, plug-ins enables customizing the functionality of an application) work with the official Minecraft server. It's the default server software that implements Bukkit.

It's necessary to use it in case you run a server with Bukkit plugins .The Bukkit is just a Programming Library of sorts, while CraftBukkit is a functioning server that mods run against, yet the two work together and it's difficult to separate them. It implements the interfaces that Bukkit specifies.

Bukkit is the API that plugins can use. It is a stable API, meaning classes/interfaces/methods won't change without warning. Most plugins only need to develop against this. It has a good set of JavaDoc documentation.
