This is a good laptop and a great value for the purposes for which I bought it.
1) programming, due to the resolution and decent screen size.
2) playing my favorite games, which are TF2, SC2, WoW, and LoL
I could tell that from the specs, so I was not surprised.

The unexpected downsides:
The keyboard keys feel a bit strange and flimsy.
The speakers are not loud enough to watch shows as a group at maximum settings! (external speakers solves this problem easily)
I also did not expect the... grid shape of the up/down/left/right key and I really dislike how insert/delete are right next to them, but apparently this is now a very popular laptop keyboard layout.
=.= crappy pre-installed software -- I know less tech-savvy people need it.
Big and heavy power brick

The major unexpected upside:
I left my laptop with my roommates for a couple days, and I'm pretty sure they broke it accidentally. The verdict from ASUS was water damage to the LCD (WTF how the hell did they do that?!)

Anyways, I sent it in for RMA, and had to pay for shipping to ASUS, but that was it! This laptop was under a year old, so they fixed it for no charge at all under accidental damage warranty. They didn't even charge for shipping back! I did have to call in to get the RMA moving, as opposed to having their internet service work, but that is to be expected. The people on the phone understood that I was tech-savvy and allowed me to explain that I already tested all the basics such as a hard reset. Their RMA steps were also pretty clear. Fill in what you send, what you suspect the problem is, and any other problems you had, and they'll look at it. Wonderful, stress-free support!

In the future, don't trust your laptop with your mates unless you are BFFs, or you buy an ASUS ;)
This computer is actually really awesome. I got the laptop with the i5 processor because the i7 jumped from $900 to $1400 in under a month. But nonetheless, I decided to purchase this laptop due to it's awesome reviews. The computer really is quite something.

-in high performance mode, this thing is FAST
-it comes with many USB ports, including a USB 3.0 port
-HDMI port
-Lots of memory, HDD and RAM
-It runs very quietly

-charging port is in the back, and the charging cable makes a right angle right out of the port
