During the early fall, we had a three-day blackout. The house became dark and cold and almost uninhabitable. That convinced me to get a backup generator. I purchased the Generac 5943 GP7500E 9,375 Watt Generator with Electric Start less than a month ago. I had my electrician rewire my circuit-breaker panel so that the generator would be able to supply the entire house (except central air conditioning). He plans to add a manual throw switch that will automatically disconnect the main circuit breaker while switching the house to a circuit breaker connected to the generator. He added a connecting outlet on the outside of my house and provided me with 20 ft high-capacity extension cord to allow me flexibility in positioning the generator.

The 7,500 Watt capacity (with 9,375 Watt surge capability) is more than enough to run my necessary household appliances. (By the way, Amazon mislabeled the unit as 9,375 Watt. That is its surge rating. It should be labeled 7,500 Watt, hence the model name "GP7500E". "E" is for electric start.)

Fortunately, I haven't lost power since I purchased it. But, I have tested the system a few times to check its performance. It started each time with no hesitation and the house powered up as though there was no power failure. Previous reviewers stressed the importance and convenience of electric start - and I think they are correct. While it might add $200 to the price, I feel the convenience is well worth it. The unit itself appears very well constructed and the controls are conveniently placed. A concern I have is its use in inclement weather. According to its "Q & A" page for the GP7500E, Generac has the following answer to a customer's question:

"We do not recommend operating these units in the rain or snow. Not only can excessive moisture increase the risk of electric shock, it can cause damage to the generator's wiring. Also, if moisture enters the fuel system, it could cause problems starting or running the generator, and even cause damage to the engine."

That seems sort of strange to me since there is a reasonable chance that a blackout will occur exactly under those conditions. My sons have generators and have used them is rain and snow with no ill effects. My electrician indicated that inclement weather should not have a detrimental affect on the unit. He suggested that in rain or snow (and particularly in heavy rain), I should place a 4' X 4' sheet of plywood on it so the rain does not fall on it directly.
