Offering an ideal combination of performance and space-saving ingenuity, the Universal Power Pak dumbbell and stand set is a great choice for athletes and beginning weight trainers alike. The Power Pak dumbbells--which adjust from 4 to 45 pounds in 5-pound increments--work just like a weight stack at the gym. When you want to change weights, simply move the weight selector dial to the appropriate setting. As you lift the handle, the weights lift with you, turning your 10-pound dumbbell into a 20-pound, 30-pound, or 40-pound dumbbell. The dumbbell set lets you perform everything from light tricep extensions to bicep curls to incline bench press, all with a single dumbbell set. No more cluttering up your workout space with dozens of weights, or trudging across the room to grab new dumbbells each time you switch exercises. I've had this dumbbell set for about a month now and have used them many times (10-15 uses). I only use them for lifting on a weight bench or while sitting/standing. No P90X or Insanity workout for me. So my review is not inclusive of high-motion workouts like P90X or Insanity. I'll go through a list of the pro's and con's:

Pro's:
-Price. Great compared to similar models(Bowflex).
-Rubber coated, non-slip grips feel good in the hands. Is truly non-slip.
-Up to 45 lbs each is nice. You stay challenged.
-Easy to adjust once you learn about the "directional" issue (see below)
-Look great. The grey color scheme works for me. I really like the look.
-Stand is sturdy. No wobble. And the stand is easy to move around once you remove the weights.
-The weight rattling is minimal imo. They do rattle when you lift but this is to be expected with any adjustable dumbbells and I've seen much worse.

Con's:
-When trying to adjust the weights, sometimes there is a problem and the knob does not turn even though the weight is fully and properly seated in the base. After playing around with the weights for a bit I realized that if you pull the weight out, spin it around and set it back down into the holster, the dial will turn normally. For some reason, the weights seem to only adjust when seated a particular direction even though they will fully seat in either direction. Hint: I marked the proper direction using a Sharpie so no more guess work. So for those who say these don't adjust or just "stopped" working...try spinning the weight around before placing it in the holster.
-As with any heavy adjustable dumbbell, the weight is bulky and weird feeling when using a low weight (4 or 10 lbs). But you get used to this and it is to be expected with adjustable dumbbells. Not really a con I guess but something I thought I would point out for those who are new to this type of dumbbell.
-No other cons.

Overall, I give this dumbbell set a well deserved 5 stars. It is highly functional, looks great, feels great in the hands and is quick and easy to adjust. The price is great compared to other similar models (Bowflex) and the quality seems top notch. I would definitely recommend this set to anyone looking to start, expand or diversify a home weight-lifting routine.

I am a-25 year-old male and have been doing the P90X workouts for the last year or so. I started out with an inexpensive 40 lb dumbbell set from the local super store. They were alright for the price, but I quickly outgrew them, and it took a while to switch the weight during the fast-paced P90X workouts.

I wanted a heavier set that could change weights quickly, and these fit the bill. At first I had my eye on the Bowflex SlectTechs, but after doing a little looking around I decided on these because: 1. They are less expensive. 2. This set includes the stand at no additional cost. (unlike the SelectTechs) 3. You only have to turn one dial per dumbbell to change the weight. There is a dial on both sides, but when one is turned, the one on the opposite side turns as well. (unlike the SelectTechs).

The only downsides compared the the SelectTechs are 1. They are a little lighter (max is 45 lbs each). 2. The weight increments are 5 lbs (the SelectTechs have increments of 2.5 lbs up to 25 lbs then 5lbs the rest of the way up (I think. Double check me on that.)

Anyway, they are very good quality. The hand grips are comfortable with a rubbery texture, the dial mechanism is very smooth and durable (just don't drop or throw them onto the floor), and the stand is also very good quality. Overall, I am very pleased.
