The Foretrex 401 is rugged and lighter than many watches as well as waterproof. It features an electronic compass, a barometric altimeter and a USB interface. You can even wirelessly share routes, tracks and waypoints between units. It also incorporates a trip computer, sunrise/sunset and hunting and fishing information and can connect to your PC.  When it's time to head back, simply turn on the TracBack® feature, and Foretrex will retrace your path back to where you started. With Foretrex, you can always find your way back.

Navigate with ease

The Foretrex 401 can store up to 500 waypoints and 20 routes so you can navigate from point to point and chronicle your journey as you go. The dual-position readout means you can view your current location in multiple formats, including latitude/longitude and an alternate position format of your choice so you'll always know where you are.

The electronic compass helps you get your bearings and points you towards your destination, even when you are standing still. And the barometric altimeter gives precise elevation readings - ideal if you're out hiking in the hills.

For even more data, connect Foretrex 401 to a wireless accessory, such as a Garmin heart rate monitor and/or cadence sensor, so you can see how hard you're working on your trip. You can even clip it on your bike with the optional bike mount.

The 401 has been excellent for me. Whilst it is pretty similar to the 301 in the sense that you can change the position format from OSGB to Lat Long/MGRS, the biggest difference is the moving compass. When navigating on roads where mapping is scarce or your map doesn't have every track marked on, as long as you have your destination or waypoint programmed in, it will (for example) at a Y-junction give you the correct road to go down, used as a primary means of nav or as a confidence check, it is awesome. As well as the direction, which can be changed from mils to degrees and vice versa, it gives the user a distance to run to the point, which is ideal if you are just moving to a point on the ground and not a prominent feature.

The light function is helpful, although the user is unable to change the brightness which means at night, its not exactly subtle. The user can turn off the beeping function as well, making it quiet to use.

Its pretty good on batteries, but if you're constantly on the move, you can probably expect to go though a set of aaa's in 24 hours. If the user wants to prolong the battery, turning it off and then on only when you need it is a viable option as the unit is pretty quick to aquire satelites, and I have had no trouble with loss of signal in undergrowth or tree canopy.

Its mega user friendly and working out how to plug in waypoints, give them names and edit the information did not require the use of the manual.

its small and lightweight and not much heavier than for example a large suunto watch. The strap is robust and doesn't have the old watchpin fastening (think that was on the 301) to the unit itself which is one less thing to break.

My unit has frozen once, and I had to remove the batteries to reset it, but it was fine thereafter. Another time, it failed to populate the altitude, but once again, turning it off then on again sorted the problem straight away. Having it go wrong twice in a 5 week period of constant use, is pretty good figures i think.
