As someone who works in IT, the last thing I want after a forty-to-fifty hour work week are phone calls from my family on why their computers don't work. As someone who spends the extra cash on purchasing a Mac for the hassle-free environment, my family sees things differently when it comes to purchasing computers. They want the cheapest machine that'll give them the best bang for their buck. Unfortunately, my family purchased my grandfather an eMachines desktop more than five years ago and I've been the poor bastard who has to fix it when things go wrong. Not because my grandfather did anything wrong, but because the other family members (who think they're computer experts) did. I was growing old dealing with all the problems, specifically due to Windows Vista not working the way it should. Instead of throwing money at upgrading the hardware and software of the desktop, I decided to purchase him a new desktop as an early Christmas gift.

I know that all my grandfather uses the computer are for email, Facebook, and specific websites. My options for a solid machine came between the Apple Mac Mini MD387LL/A Desktop (NEWEST VERSION) and a Samsung Series 3 Chromebox. Based upon needs and price, the Chromebox won. Hell, just before accessories and protection plans, the Mac Mini and Chromebox already have a $270 difference between them. While I had my initial worries about the Chrome OS as it's still relatively new, any concerns were relieved once I got the computer up and running.

For a desktop slightly more than $300, the Chromebox has some decent hardware underneath the hood. A dual-core Intel Celeron processor, 4GB of memory and a 16GB solid-state drive. From my professional opinion, I would've been okay spending a few dollars more for a faster hardware and more storage capacity. However, one has to remember this is a desktop to simply access the internet. The moment you push the power button, the machine is up and running mere seconds later and the initial setup process is fairly simple. It took a while on my grandfather's slow DSL connection to download the updates that start immediately, but the machine found all of his accessories like his newly purchased Logitech Wireless Combo Mk520 With Keyboard and Laser Mouse (920-002553) instantly. Once we logged in with his Google account, the machine was ready to go to surf the web. On my grandfather's old eMachines desktop, the internet was slow regardless of his connection. With the Chromebox, even his slow connection feels fast. The Chrome OS, unlike the Windows environment, is lean, mean and takes no crap. Similar to the Mac OS, when you want the computer to do something, it will do it for you with no questions asked. For a machine that's primary focus is to get you on the internet, it does that in spades.
